Is it possible to overcome social anxiety and is it possible without a psychologist or counselor?

I am shy to the extreme and so scared to approach people that aren’t related to me no matter how often I see them due to my fear of rejection and being self-concious. It’s getting outta hand and really need serious help and my parents don’t seem to think it’s serious. What can I do and how I can start? Is it possible without going to a specialist? I’m so lost. I’d appreciate it if someone can help. Thank you!

it’s actually really normal to be afraid of new people because on a very primitive level we know every stranger is a potential enemy, and we have to be on guard because of that. some people are just more sensitive than most, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

that being said, you can train yourself out of it by ‘exposing’ yourself to new people and talking to them again and again, eventually through sheer tenacity your mind will understand most of the time there’s nothing to fear, and you will be comfortable about doing it
but it takes time, and patience. be gentle with yourself. you’re trying to erase millenia of genetic instinct

I have just recently gotten over a social anxiety problem that lasted for about 2 and a half years. I never felt comfortable being outside my home and felt that I was too strange or weird to ever be accepted by anyone. I was majorly depressed because I felt isolated and dissatisfied with life. If you can, please go to a specialist! Those of us who suffer from anxiety problems have a muted perceptions of reality, because of this reason it would be very difficult for you to get better by yourself. Also you may need meds to help you cope with this problem. I owe my success to the professionals that have helped me.
